Sod installation in Houston fails when the rolls go down on sealed clay. The seams sit in water. The roots never leave the sod. Axe Lawn Services installs St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia on developed lots after the surface can take them. Cool-season mixes do not hold through a Houston summer. We do not sell them as the lawn.

Which grass belongs on the lot?
St. Augustine handles shade and mixed light. It is the default under live oaks. Bermuda wants full sun. Zoysia is the denser, slower lawn where traffic is light and the owner will wait for it to knit. Shade plus Bermuda is a thin lawn with a reel or without one. Match the grass to the light before the truck is ordered.
| Grass | Light | Traffic | How it is kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| St. Augustine | Shade and full sun. The lawn under live oaks. | Ordinary yard traffic | Higher cut, usually three to four inches |
| Bermuda | Full sun. Shade leaves it thin. | Kids, pets, and heavier use | Shorter cut. A reel if the stand can hold it. |
| Zoysia | Sun, and more shade than Bermuda | Light to moderate. It is slow to knit. | Denser canopy. Slower growth. |
What has to happen before the sod is laid?
Gumbo needs a workable surface. A layer of better soil on raw clay gives roots a place to start. Grade has to move water away from the foundation. A low corner that already ponds will pond under new sod. Soil preparation is its own step when the grade is the problem. A broken irrigation zone should be repaired before the sod depends on it. A new system is an irrigation installation.
New sod needs water on a short cycle for the first two to three weeks, often every day. One long run on clay sheets off and the seams dry. After it roots, the lawn moves to mowing at the height that grass can hold.
The install itself is four steps. Dead grass, weeds, and debris come off. The clay is graded so water leaves the foundation, with a workable layer where roots can start. Rolls go down tight, seams staggered. Then the watering schedule for those first weeks is written down, not left as a guess.
Spring and early fall are the easier windows. Houston sod can go down in other months, but summer heat and winter dormancy are harder on a new root. The light and the grade still decide whether the day is right.

Questions
When is the best time for sod installation in Houston?
Spring and early fall, before the hardest heat or winter dormancy. It can be laid in other months when the grade and the water are ready.
Does new sod need water every day?
For the first two to three weeks, yes, on a short cycle. A single long run on clay runs off and the seams dry.
Do you prep the soil before the sod goes down?
Yes. Sod on sealed, unworked clay does not root. The old lawn comes off, the grade moves water away from the house, and the surface has to be workable first.
